Phil Hansen: The art of the imperfect. A brief talk on embracing limitations and using them as a means to explore new avenues of art and creative thinking— want to make games, but stumped by programming? What if you made a game in RPGMaker VX that uses only stock material and use that to bolster the idea of the game? Anyone can be a chef by throwing open their cupboards and experimenting with what they find, and if you’ve ever wanted to write a story but cannot get yourself to sit down and write for more than a few minutes, what if you experiment by writing one sentence a day and seeing where your story takes you?
We live in a society that simultaneously puts art and artists on a pedestal and in a pit: they are admired for their talent, but degraded for their apparent lackadaisical nature. As a result, art has become something awfully rigorous and “straight-lined”, with very specific societal rules and requirements to become an “artist”… Creating art by embracing limitation is an excellent way for anyone, yes, even you, to step off that boring straight path.
